INTRODUCCION
La flora de Nayarit, por largo tiempo desconocida, actualmente ha
proveido numerosas colecciones e informacion valiosa de primera mano,
producidas a traves de los proyectos de investigacion "Flora de Nayarit"
(1988-1993) y "Base de datos e inventario floristico de la reserva ecologica
Sierra de San Juan, Nayarit, Mexico" (1993-1995); patrocinados por CONACyT y
CONABIO respectivamente.
Como parte de los resultados, se registraron 134 familias, 506 generos
y 1200 especies, un numero importante de especies endemicas locales y
regionales, asi como registros de poblaciones disyuntas (Tellez, 1995). Una
muestra de los resultados obtenidos es el presente listado de la flora de la
reserva de la Sierra San Juan, en donde se ha registrado alrededor del 30% de
la flora estatal en una superficie de alrededor de 400 km2.
El trabajo esta compuesto por las especies registradas con base en el
trabajo de campo y aquellas colecciones depositadas en el Herbario Nacional
(MEXU) y el herbario de la Escuela Nacional de Ciencis Biologicas (ENCB).
Alrededor del 10% de las especies aqui registradas ha sido citado con base en
la literatura, se trata de especies que durante el desarrollo del proyecto no
fueron colectadas, y que en su mayoria fueron tomadas de McVaugh (1974, 1983,
1984, 1987, 1989, 1992, 1993) y se encuentran depositadas en el herbario de la
Universidad de Michigan (MICH).
DATOS DE LA RESERVA
Parte de la Sierra de San Juan fue decretada el 28 de octubre de 1987
como una reserva ecologica estatal por el gobierno de Nayarit, sin que mediara
estudio previo alguno o un proceso de planificacion para la conservacion
(Blanco, 1994), por lo que el presente trabajo es una aportacion para su
conocimiento.
La Sierra de San Juan es una prominencia montanosa perteneciente al
Eje Volcanico Transversal, se trata de la porcion terminal occidental de dicha
cadena montanosa que en su porcion perteneciente a la reserva va de los 930 a
los 2250 m de altitud. Se localiza en forma precisa en la parte centro
occidental del estado, en las afueras de la ciudad de Tepic.
La Reserva Ecologica Sierra de San Juan se localiza entre los paralelos
21§20ï y 21§32ï de latitud norte y los meridianos 104§53ï y 105§03ï de longitud
oeste, dentro de los municipios de Tepic y Xalisco, abarcando una superficie
de 26,690 ha. Pertenece a la provincia fisiografica del Eje Neovolcanico
Transversal, subprovincia de las Sierras Neovolcanicas Nayaritas (INEGI, 1975).
Limita al norte con la provincia fisiografica de la Llanura Costera del
Pacifico; al norte, noreste y este con la Sierra Madre Occidental; en la parte
meridional con la Sierra Madre del Sur; al poniente con el Oceano Pacifico; y
un contacto muy limitado con la subprovincia neovolcanica de Jalisco.
Esta sierra proviene de un vulcanismo calco-alcalino con edificios de
tamano medio (emisiones de 100 km3 de materiales) de edad plio-pleistocenica
(Demant, 1979), superpuesto a un vulcanismo cuaternario y a un miocenico
(Gastil y Krummenacher, 1978). Se encuentran una serie de aparatos volcanicos
andesiticos y basalticos de antiguedad pliocenica. De eventos netamente
cuaternarios se presentan las andesitas y basaltos. Del Plioceno/Cuaternario
las pomes con o sin afloramiento de basaltos o de andesitas y por ultimo, del
periodo reciente, los aluviones y diversos coluviones.
Los suelos encontrados en la reserva son andosoles humicos, molicos y
asociados a otras unidades (9, 905 has); regosoles eutricos (5, 991 has),
cambisoles disticos, cromicos y humicos (2,881 has); luvisoles cromicos y
orticos (5,365 has), acrisoles orticos y humicos (1,549 has) y feozems haplicos
(309 has), clasificacion FAO-UNESCO, Bojorquez (1992).
La hidrologia del area es tipica de zonas volcanicas, presenta un
"patron de drenaje radial, paralelo y dendritico, con densidad media y alta..."
(Cuanalo et al. 1989). La hidrologia de la Sierra de San Juan esta constituida
principalmente por dos subcuencas; los rios Huicicila, Ixtapan, El naranjo, El
palillo, Navarrete y Santa (en la subcuenca de San Blas) y Mololoa (en la
subcuenca de Santiago-Aguamilpa), Blanco (1990).
En general, el area posee clima semicalido subhumedo propio de la costa
de Nayarit, con las mayores precipitaciones medias anuales de la costa mexicana
del Pacifico debido posiblemente a varios factores: 1) su cercania con el mar;
2) su altitud; 3) su localizacion respecto a los vientos alisios de las sierras
que recorren el pais en toda su longitud (Garcia y Trejo, 1990); 4) su
ubicacion en la ruta de corriente de chorro subtropical, de las colas o frentes
de ciclones extratropicales por ser el area de mayor influencia de las
trayectorias de termino de los ciclones del Oceano Pacifico oriental, (Garcia
y Trejo, 1990; Jauregui, 1990).
Se presentan tres tipos de clima: semicalido subhumedo (intermedio),
semicalido subhumedo (seco) y templado subhumedo, distribuidos respectivamente
en la vertiente occidental, en la vertiente oriental y en las cumbres (Garcia,
1981):
Awý(w) Subtipo de clima calido subhumedo, el mas humedo de los calidos
subhumedos con lluvias en verano.
(A)C(wý)(w) Subtipo de clima semicalido subhumedo, el mas calido de los
templados C, el mas humedo de las semicalidos subhumedos con lluvias en verano.
C(w2)(w) Subtipo de clima templado subhumedo, el mas humedo de los
templados subhumedos, con lluvias en verano.
La distribucion anual de la temperatura denota un clima isotermico,
presentando una variacion de la media anual que va de 24.7 *C (San Blas) y
20.9 *C (Tepic), con maximas entre 23.6 *C (Tepic) y 28.0 *C (San Blas) y
minima entre 17.2 *C (Tepic) y 21.4 *C (San Blas). La variacion diurna es alta,
presentando durante el verano en la parte baja de la reserva rangos entre 18 *C
y 30 *C y en invierno va de 12 *C a 27 *C, mientras que, en la cumbre, los
valores estimados varian entre 9 y 21 *C y 6 y 21 *C, respectivamente (Blanco,
1994).
La distribucion anual de la precipitacion muestra una marcada
estacionalidad, produciendo de manera clara una estacion de lluvias de junio a
octubre y una estacion de sequia (estiaje o canicula) de noviembre a mayo. Los
valores medios anuales de precipitacion varian, siendo de 1,396.5 mm en San
Blas (nivel del mar junto al litoral), de 1,758 mm en Paso de Arocha (vertiente
maritima de la Sierra, a 150 m snm) y de 1,348.9 mm en Tepic (a 950 m snm, al
lado de sotavento, de los vientos maritimos). En tanto sus valores medios de
temporada de lluvias (junio a octubre) son de 1348.6 mm, 1,689.7 mm y 1,217 mm,
respectivamente; mientras que 47.9 mm, 68.3 mm y 131.9 mm corresponden a los
mismos lugares en la temporada de secas (calculados a partir de los datos de
Garcia, 1981).
Todos los climas de la zona presentan un porcentaje de lluvia invernal
menor de 5 % aunque esto probalemente sea compensado en la vertiente de
barlovento (relativa a los vientos maritimos) por las frecuentes nieblas y
brisas que mantienen una humedad relativa muy elevada y por la baja insolacion
frecuente en invierno.
VEGETACION
De acuerdo con Blanco (1994) y Tellez (1995), en la region se
encuentran los siguientes tipos de vegetacion: bosque tropical subcaducifolio,
bosque mesofilo de montana, bosque tropical caducifolio, bosque de coniferas,
bosque de Quercus, bosque de Pinus-Quercus y en un grado mucho menor un
pastizal inducido.
DATOS SOBRE LA FLORA
La flora de la reserva ha mostrado ser muy diversa, sobre todo si se
considera que en esta porcion centro-occidental del pais el clima no es tan
propicio como en las partes mas tropicales de Mexico. No obstante, en la region
que ocupa la porcion mas occidental del Eje Volcanico Transversal, y que es en
donde se localiza la Reserva de San Juan, por una serie de fenomenos climaticos
(lluvia tipo monzon; Garcia y Trejo, 1981) la precipitacion es la mas alta en
todo el occidente de Mexico, y la topografia muy accidentada, condiciones que
han propiciado la diversidad biologica ya senalada (Llorente y Escalante, 1992;
Llorente y Luis, 1993 en mariposas; Escalante, 1982, en aves; Tellez, 1995, en
plantas vasculares).
El cuadro 1 muestra los grupos vegetales mas diversos en la flora de la
reserva; solo 20 familias, 340 generos y 824 especies, representan mas del
25%, 65% y 67% de la flora respectivamente.

El ordenamiento de la presente lista es el siguiente, en primer
termino, las pteridofitas siguen a Mickel (1992). A continuacion las
gimnospermas y angiospermas, y dentro de estas en dicotiledoneas y
monocotiledoneas. Sin embargo, dentro de las Monocotiledoneas, la familia
Agavaceae ha sido considerada en forma independiente de acuerdo con Cronquist
(1981). Dentro de cada categoria suprafamiliar, la familias, generos y especies
se encuentran en orden alfabetico.
