COTTONMOUTH
(AGKISTRODON PISCIVORUS) NEURO-ECOLOGY: AN
INTEGRATIVE APPROACH TO EXAMINING PATTERNS OF SPATIAL
USE. Roth, E.D.1, W.I. Lutterschmidt2 and

Oklahoma, Norman, OK 73019, 2Department of Biological
Sciences, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, TX
77341. The reptilian medial and dorsal cortices
are putative homologues of the hippocampal formation in
mammals and birds. Studies on mammals and birds commonly
report neuro-ecological correlations between hippocampal
volume and spatial ecology. We examined the relationship
between homologous cortical volumes and spatial use in a
reptile (Agkistrodon piscivorus) that exhibits sex
differences in spatial use. Male and female brains were
sectioned and digitized to quantify regional cortical
volumes. Males had a significantly larger medial cortex
volume relative to telencephalon volume. We will discuss
volumetric sex differences within a reptilian putative
hippocampal homologue and the interesting correlates between
cortical volume and spatial ecology.

PREPARATION OF
PRESENTATIONS:
- POSTER PRESENTATIONS: Posters must be no larger than 48
inches (120 cm) wide and 36 inches (90 cm) tall. Posters
will be mounted to display boards; push pins will be provided by
the local committee.
- ORAL PRESENTATIONS: All forms of audiovisual equipment
will be available. However, Microsoft PowerPoint©
presentations saved to CDs or data sticks are strongly recommended
and encouraged. Presenters will be required to submit
presentation material to moderators 30 minutes prior to the
beginning of each paper session.
STUDENT
AWARDS: All application materials and information
regarding student awards can be found on the SWAN web site
(www.biosurvey.ou.edu/swan/).
Many of these award applications require online electronic
submission.
- STUDENT TRAVEL AWARDS: The Southwestern
Association of Naturalists is granting student travel awards to
help defray travel and meeting expenses for students attending the
53rd Annual Meeting to be held 13-15 April 2006 in Colima,
Colima. These awards will be given to students from outside
Mexico who are presenting an oral or poster presentation.
Sorry, deadline has already passed.
- WILKS AWARD: The Wilks Award is
presented to the student giving the best oral presentation at the
Annual Meeting of the Association. Research must be
primarily the work of the student, not that of the major
professor, and the student must be the sole author of the
abstract. From those submitting written summaries, a judging
panel will select up to four students to make oral presentations
(15 minutes in length) in a special plenary session at the
beginning of the Annual Meeting. A winner will be selected
from this group based on the quality of the oral presentation and
the significance of the results. The Wilks Award has a cash
award of $500, a certificate, and a set of all available back
issues of The Southwestern Naturalist. The winner will be
announced at the Annual Banquet.
- CLARK HUBBS STUDENT POSTER AWARD: The
Clark Hubbs Student Poster Award is presented to the student or
students displaying the best poster at the Annual Meeting of the
Association. This award provides a certificate, a cash award
of $300, and a set of all available back issues of The
Southwestern Naturalist. Although posters may be co-authored
with the major professor, the work presented must be primarily
that of the student(s). A panel of judges will select the
winner based on quality of the visual presentation and
significance of the results. The winner will be announced at
the Annual Banquet.
- HOWARD McCARLEY STUDENT RESEARCH
AWARDS: The Howard McCarley Student Research Fund
provides up to five awards annually, up to $1000 each, to support
student research. Applicants must be students (undergraduate
or graduate) currently enrolled in an institution of higher
education, sponsored by a faculty member, and a member of the
Southwestern Association of Naturalists. Awards (maximum of
$1000) will be made in support of any aspect of research on biota
of the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America,
except for travel to meetings. Individuals may receive a
maximum of two grants from the Association. All qualified
students are encouraged to apply, especially those in developing
countries. Grant applications may be in either English or
Spanish. Awards will be announced at the Annual Meeting of
the Association. Two letters of recommendation must be
submitted in support of the application. One must be from the
research advisor and the second from someone familiar with the
student’s academic career and proposed research project. All
materials must be received by the President-Elect no later than 15
January each year.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS to SWAN
2006:
- AIR TRAVEL: There are three options for
those members traveling by plane that include the Colima Domestic
Airport (16 miles northeast of Colima City), or the international
airports of Manzanillo (80 miles southwest of Colima City)
and Guadalajara (125 miles northeast of Colima City).
Taxis will be available from all airports to Colima City at
varying fares depending of the arrival airport ($12 US from the
Colima airport, $180 US from Guadalajara and $60 US from
Manzanillo), These airports have several choices in ground
transportation including a variety of rental car services. Taxis
from airports to bus stations are about $13 US in all cases.
- TRAVEL to Colima City from Puerto Vallarta (~ 253
miles) or Manzanillo (~ 61 miles):
- Take Carretera Federal 200 south along the coast from Puerto
Vallarta to Barra de Navidad.
- Once you pass Barra de Navidad, keep driving to Manzanillo
- There are two options near Manzanillo, one goes through
Manzanillo and the other around it (Toll is ~ $4 US).
- From Manzanillo, passing through or around it, you can take
a toll road ($8 US) or again Carretera Federal 200 to Colima.
- Colima City is small such that you can get to the University
easily by following signs or by asking directions. Many
people speak English.
- TRAVEL to Colima City from Guadalajara (~ 141
miles):
- After leaving Guadalajara towards Colima (~ 13 miles) you
find a “Y.” Take the left fork to Colima expressway. The
right fork goes to Barra de Navidad; don´t take the fork to
Barra since you will make a huge loop.
- The registration site for the meeting is the
Paraninfo, which is a building very easy to locate at the
Universidad de Colima. See the map on the SWAN webpage
http://www.ibiologia.unam.mx/
