October 2002 -- The Neotropical Ichthyological Association and the American Society of Ichthyologists will host the WILLIAM A. GOSLINE SYMPOSIUM ON NEOTROPICAL ICHTHYOLOGY during the upcoming 2003 Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, to be held in Manaus, Brazil, June 26 - July 01, 2003.
William A. Gosline was a most cherished ichthyologist, with long-standing interests in functional morphology and classification of Teleostean fishes. He is well known for his contributions to South American ichthyology, where he published on catfish and characiform systematics. His work also included marine fishes, with a primary focus on Hawaiian fishes. His life-long dedication to ichthyology was recognized by ASIH in 1996, when he was awarded the Robert H. Gibbs, Jr. Award. The Symposium will honor the memory of Bill Gosline and will also provide a focus on Neotropical Ichthyology during the first meeting of ASIH to take place in South America. The focus on Neotropical Ichthyology is quite appropriate because Bill Gosline started his professional career in Brazil, studying fish at the Brazilian National Museum.
The symposium will bring together former friends of Bill Gosline and ichthyologists interested in Neotropical Ichthyology from North and South America (and other parts of the World). It will include both invited and contributed presentations.
At this time we would like to invite all those interested in presenting contributions or suggestions for the symposium to send their ideas and suggestions to Paulo Buckup (buckup@acd.ufrj.br). If you would like to participate in the Symposium and present a paper on Neotropical Ichthyology or some aspect of Gosline's life, or if you have suggestions for invited speakers, please send us a message.

PROVISIONAL LIST OF SYMPOSIUM TOPICS
- Introductory papers about Gosline's biography and contributions to Neotropical Ichthyology
- Catfish classification and diversity
- Characiform classification and diversity
- Phylogeny and systematics of the Loricariidae
- Functional morphology

November 2000 -- Position for Curatorial Assistant: Our assistant who has been at MCZ for 3 years is leaving the fish department in December so we are looking to fill her position the first week in January. The job is for a Curatorial Assistant II and involves almost all aspects of fish curation. You can log onto the job description at the following URL http://jobs.harvard.edu/jobs/summ_req?in_post_id=8988
The pay scale for the job ranges between $23,472 to 28,752, But consider that the Cambridge/Boston area is very expensive.. I'm told that so-so small, one-bedroom apartments start at least $1,000 month.

March 2000 -- A policy for publishing information affecting Zoological Nomenclature in Ichthyology, and for acquisition of donations to ichthyological collections -- Following a number of widely published arrests of aquarists collecting without proper documentation in Brazil, and another round of very poor descriptions of would-be new species in aquarium literature, a number of scientists and editors have worked on a policy, or rather a set of recommendations, which attempts to express a best code of good conduct and also a guideline for action. Numerous scientists, representing major museums and universities in Europe, North America, and South America already support the policy with their names, and the drafting committee will now post the policy text as a web document. Various publishers have also expressed interest in publishing the policy text. We now invite you to examine the policy document which can be viewed/downloaded from http://www.nrm.se/ve/pisces/poly2000.pdf You need the Adobe Acrobat reader software to view the document.
