The Instituto de Biología, UNAM, invites any person interested in Cladistics to attend and/or present within the XXV annual meeting of the Willi Hennig Society the results of their studies. Empirical and theoretical issues related to cladistics will be considered for the program. We particularly encourage students to submit the results of their work and to look for the different awards that are available through the society. Students presenting at these meetings are eligible for the Hennig Award and the Brundin Award for the two most outstanding student paper presentations, or the Rosen Award for the most outstanding poster presentation at the meetings. Each is accompanied by substantial monetary recognition of accomplishment. The guidelines for these awards are available on-line. Students are now eligible to apply for a Marie Stopes student travel award to help defray costs associated with attending the meeting.

The official language of the meetings is English. Presentations may be oral or as a poster.

Oral presentations will be 15 minutes and time for questions is unlimited, as traditionally in the Hennig meetings. A PC computer and a projector will be available for oral presentations; the standard software will be PowerPoint2003; if you have different needs, please contact Helga Ochoterena at hennigxxv@ibiologia.unam.mx as soon as possible.

Poster format: 90 x120 cm.

Proposals for symposia should be send to hennigxxv@ibiologia.unam.mx before May 1. We recommend that a symposium includes 5-6 speakers.

Talks and posters will be presented within the facilities of the hosting hotel: Misión de los Angeles

Scientific Collections in Mexico

In recent years, collecting in Mexico without an official permit is forbidden, and represents a serious violation of the law penalized with jail. The rules for scientific collections in Mexico were published in the Nom-126-Ecol-2000, in the official Mexican journal. If you plan to collect in Mexico, check your rights and obligations. This is specially true in some States of the country, where people is aware of the responsibility of taking care of the natural resources and has been trained to request and recognize official permits. The state of Oaxaca is such a case! Therefore, if you are planning to collect plants or animals while you are visiting, make sure that you have a contact in Mexico that has a permit and is willing to collaborate with you or request one for yourself. Requesting a collecting permit requires time and money, so plan in advance! Foreigners collecting in Mexico require a permit from the Foreigner Affairs Office and from SEMARNAT.
