Latmoss. A catalogue of neotropical mosses, was first published in 1995 in Monographs in Systematic Botany from the Missouri Botanical Garden 56. After fifteen years, a new electronic version by a single author is herewith introduced; this incorporates numerous changes in number, synonymy and distribution of the neotropical species. Taxonomic revisions or the description of new taxa have been the source of new names, but the use of floristic lists or publications has been largely abandoned as a mechanism to add names or distributional data. Because of this, current files may not include certain neotropical taxa cited in other publications. Although the access or availability of bibliographic material may delay the updating of a database in places in Latin America, the absence of records may be due to differences of opinion in taxonomic or nomenclatural matters. Latmoss 2010 frequently cites under synonymy the divergent species interpretations. The reader is urged to obtain additional information in TROPICOS in the Missouri Botanical Garden website.
Codes for each country or region are the same as those of the original version. They are given below for further reference. |
The section on Bibliography includes the references used to compile neotropical species names. Some references obtained in early stages of the compilation did not offer taxonomic or distributional data. However, they were not removed because they do not interfere with the access to database. The latter contains three ways to obtain bibliographic information, namely, by author, by species, and alphabetical by author.
Thanks are extended to the Missouri Botanical Garden for the hardcopy edition of the original version of Latmoss from which Latmoss 2010 derived; the book form is still available from the Garden. I also thank Biól. Enrique Ortiz Bermúdez for his generous support in the preparation of the database in its present format
