The number of type specimens in the Bryophyte Collection at MEXU is not large; there are only 235 specimens for the same number of taxa. Most represent Mexican species described by J. Cardot in Revue Bryologique from materials collected by C. G. Pringle in the early 20th century. This section does not include all protologues or original descriptions for all taxa. Because of copyrights, protologues published in the last 25 years have been excluded, notably those dealing with species described in The Bryologist.
No effort has been made to establish the taxonomic situation of the species or the nomenclatural status of the original names. The specimens are cited by basionym so that the user will have to search or decide on the nature of the type (holotype, syntype, lectotype, etc.). The synonyms and accepted names are included elsewhere on this website in the electronic version of LATMOSS 2010.
