Jalapa is situated in Veracruz Sate, about  330 kilometers  from Mexico City, and about 94 kilometers from Veracruz City. The original name of the city, Xallapan, is a Náhuatl word (the language  of the Aztecs) that means “sand spring”. The city was founded in 1513 with  prehispanic settlings and during the Spanish colony, its name was transcribed  to Spanish as Jalapa; the official name of the city is  actually Xalapa de Enríquez. With 615,017 inhabitants, the city lies in the  mountainside of the “Cofre de Perote” and so, its physiography is irregular and  hilly, with a maximum elevation of 1522 meters above sea level.
                  The state of Veracruz is situated in  eastern Mexico, sharing borders with the states of Tamaulipas (north), San Luis  Potosí, Hidalgo, Puebla and Oaxaca (west), Tabasco (east) and Chiapas (south  east), and has a long eastern border to the Mexican Gulf.
